2 easy fermented food recipes

In one of our recent Educator.Health workshops, Laura did a live demo for how to make sauerkraut! It is super easy to make and costs a fraction of what you pay for prepared fermented foods in the grocery store, so this is a win all the way around! We always ask workshop participants what they are committing to at the end of workshop. After Laura’s demo, I committed to making sauerkraut - not one of my favorite foods when I have had it in the past, so I figured I needed to try out the homemade recipe! And indeed, it was super easy and I love seeing my homemade ‘kraut sitting on my pantry shelf!

You can make it with any type of cabbage - red, green, napa- whatever you prefer. I added shredded carrots to mine after I massaged the cabbage, but you can also add it with the cabbage during the massaging process. This will give it some color and a little sweetness. Laura also provided the suggestion of adding a spicy pepper, red pepper flakes, or garlic to kick it up a notch. Add these after the massaging process. Experiment and make it your own.

Here is Laura’s recipe: Homemade Sauerkraut in a Mason Jar.

One of our participants also asked for a kimchi recipe if you are feeling more adventurous!

School break is an excellent time to take some extra time for yourself and your health, so try out some homemade fermented foods this week! Your gut microbiome will thank you 😀

Enjoy your well deserved vacation!
