Reboot from Spring Break

School breaks can be a welcome relief from our regular routine - a chance to do some things you might not get to do during school days, a chance to relax and unwind, a chance to see family and friends. But sometimes breaks can be a whirlwind, leaving you feeling out of balance when school resumes. Which kind of break did you experience?!

My break was extremely hectic as we had a last minute trip to North Carolina to take my daughter to meet her new employers and find her a place to live. While it was exciting to get a glimpse of her new life and so enjoyable to have this precious time with her, I could feel I was totally out of balance with my self-care. It dawned on me that I hadn’t meditated or done my morning stretch routine with our hectic pace. Back to basics of utilizing the Calm App for morning meditation and the Daily Move with Mel Mah for me!

As educators, our work life is punctuated with breaks which can be a natural time to reboot, like getting a New Year all over again! As you get back into the swing of school after Spring Break and back to your routines, this might be a good time to reflect on what you need for your self-care. A little tweak to your schedule to add a little movement to your day? A quick dance session when you get home? A daily reset in your car before and after school? Trying a new food each week?

If meditation or daily movement is one of your tweaks, don’t forget about the Calm App, which is free with your Excellus health care. The Daily Move with Mel Mah is a great way to incorporate some gentle yet powerful movement practice into your day. Mel explains and demonstrates 3 movements and voila you are done in about 5 or 6 minutes! This morning’s session focuses on 3 movements to help our balance - a perfect session to start our first day back from Spring Break!

Don’t forget to habit stack so that your new tweak becomes routine. The Daily Move is great to pair with getting out of bed, coffee brewing time, as you enter your classroom, lunch or transition time, before you leave your classroom, when you return home, or before you get into bed. Or, pay it forward to your students and have them do it with you during the day!

Make it a beautiful day and remember to take some time for your self care today!
